Sedation

At Lonsdale Dental Centre we understand that many patients are nervous about dental treatment, particularly if you are coming in for a major procedure. Fear of the Dentist is the main reason people give for putting off visiting a dental practice, with many neglecting their dental health for many years until a condition becomes so serious and uncomfortable they cannot ignore it.

There are many reasons for fear of the Dentist. Some patients have had a bad experience in the past, or have listened to exaggerated tales of woe from friends and family. Specific triggers, such as a fear of needles, concern about not being in control and feeling vulnerable, or fear of judgement at the condition of their teeth can cause anxiety in patients. The smells and sounds associated with a dental practice are also causes of fear, and for some people, it is difficult to identify one particular cause.

Whatever the reasons behind your fear, if you are nervous about visiting the dentist we believe we can help you.

Modern dental techniques and the state-of-the-art equipment we use mean that treatments are more comfortable than ever before. All of our staff are caring, understanding and compassionate, and will do everything possible to help you relax.

For some patients, treatment under sedation is a good option to help allow them to have the treatment they require. We offer intravenous (IV) sedation which is given by a Sedationist or Anaesthetist which is a highly trained doctor who will administer the sedation and stay with you throughout the procedure. You will feel relaxed and a little drowsy but still be able to communicate with the Dentist if you need to. Often after the procedure, patients say it went very quickly and they don’t remember any details of the procedure.

The after-effects of sedation will last for some time after your appointment, so you will not be able to drive or drink alcohol for 24 hours, and should bring a friend or family member with you to make sure you get home safely.
